July 3, 2026Wilsonville High School Student Delegation – Day 3

Day 3 began with a bamboo dragonfly workshop led by Mr. Makino.
A bamboo dragonfly may look like a simple toy, but there’s actually a lot to learn from it! Under Mr. Makino’s guidance, the students made their own plastic bamboo dragonflies.
They were easy to assemble, but even a slight change in the angle or height of the blades made a huge difference in how they flew.
Even if one didn’t fly well at first, Mr. Makino would make just a tiny adjustment—and suddenly it flew beautifully!
His hands seemed almost magical.
He also explained how changing the angle of the blades affects whether the dragonfly flies higher or stays in the air longer. It was a fun lesson in aerodynamics!
Mr. Makino prepared everything for the workshop and shared his wish that the students would fly their bamboo dragonflies under the wide, beautiful skies of America.
His kindness and heartfelt thoughtfulness truly touched us.
Thank you so much, Mr. Makino!
Next, we visited Daini Kodomoen, where Michael led an English activity.
The Wilsonville high school students joined the nursery children for the activities!
Together they wrote wishes on Tanabata paper strips and enjoyed learning English through fun games and conversations. The children’s energy and smiles brought joy to everyone.
At the end, the children and students gifts before saying their goodbyes.

Thank you very much to everyone at Daini Kodomoen!
That evening, we held our Welcome BBQ!
Before the barbecue, the Wilsonville students helped with the shopping. They divided into three teams—vegetables, fruit, and snacks—and each team had a budget. The fruit team had ¥4,000, while the other teams each had ¥3,000. Their challenge was to spend as close to the budget as possible without going over.
Amazingly, two teams matched their budgets exactly!
Everyone took the challenge very seriously—and had a lot of fun doing it!
